In the 1980s, Lloyd and three friends developed a hobby company called PowerUp. Run from a garage in suburban Brisbane, PowerUp provided bulletin board access to other computer enthusiasts in Queensland. By the early 1990s, PowerUp was growing so rapidly it required Lloyd’s full-time attention.
Lloyd was the driving force behind the company’s success as it became one of Australia’s largest internet service providers (ISPs). PowerUp provided sophisticated services for customers beyond internet access, such as allowing customers to self service their own websites and email access.
OzEmail bought half of PowerUp in 1998 and the remaining business in 2000. The transaction valued PowerUp at $12 million,
